There are many reasons to love Denis Leary, but, at this very moment, chief among them is the fact that his new series, Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, premieres on FX tonight. Leary plays the former lead singer of The Heathens, a rock band that broke up on the very day its album was released. Them's the breaks.
If the show does well, The Heathens will no doubt join beloved fictional bands like Scrantonicity, Dingoes Ate My Baby, and Foregone Conclusion in our pop culture echelon. You know, the fake groups from films and TV that didn't actually do much performing on screen, but still made you want to rush out and buy concert tickets? Don't lie: We know Martha Dunnstock isn't the only one with a Big Fun T-shirt hanging in the closet somewhere.
If "Sandcastles in the Sand" or "Friends Forever" are on your iTunes, this list is for you. If kids banging out covers or A-listers lip-syncing their hearts out tickles your fancy, you'll no doubt know these awesome (but, alas, totally fake) bands by heart. They may not visit arenas, but they are just a remote click away.
