Johnson had just begun his career at UCC when he was killed yesterday. His mother, Tonja Johnson Engel, explained to NBC news that Johnson struggled with drug abuse before enrolling in a Salvation Army program, and turning his life around. “He started Monday and he was so proud of what he had accomplished and rightly so,” Johnson’s mother told NBC news. “The other day he looked at me and hugged me and said, ‘Mom, how long have you been waiting for one of your kids to go to college?’ and I said, 'Oh, about 20 years.'” Engel also shared her son’s last words to her “Love ya,” he had said. “I’ll see you this afternoon.” Engel heard about gunshots on UCC’s campus. She did not find her son.
