The TV show Friends has enjoyed so much widespread popularity that many of its set pieces are instantly recognizable. Even now, 25 years after the pilot's premiere in 1994, a glimpse of certain features like the orange couch inside Central Perk or the tiny yellow picture frame that hung on the back of Monica's apartment door still trigger fond memories of watching the show each Thursday night or all night, every night on Netflix.
In honor of those significant set pieces that made Friends what it was and still is — a series that makes us laugh, occasionally cry, and binge-watch for hours — we spoke to the show's production designer John Shaffner to uncover the story behind each item. Ahead, he gives us the scoop.
