Last year Jason Wu stunned us with bondage tape ponytails and bonkers-yet-breathtaking jungle green eyes. So, suffice it to say we were stoked to see what he had up his sleeve this season. Lucky for us (and you), we didn't have to wait: We got the chance to go backstage the day before the show and peep the beauty test. That means you're getting an exclusive first look at the hair and makeup before anybody else. You're welcome.
The beauty dream team of hair guru Odile Gilbert and makeup artist Diane Kendal are the wizards behind the look for Wu's spring '13 show. "The inspiration was Helmut Newton images,' says Kendal. "Jason showed us images of strong, bold, confident, glamorous, and sexy women — so I immediately thought of that red lip. It's a very modern '80s kind of woman."
Wu, Gilbert, and Kendal worked meticulously to create a beauty look that would both compliment the collection and stand on it's own. "She is not a shiny girl this season," says Wu. "We wanted the makeup to be more flat, since there is so much texture in the collection."
The makeup was a sculpted, sexy look — very reminiscent of the Helmut Newton photographs, with a bold, red lip balanced by an even bolder brow. Kendal started off with a brighter red, but Wu asked that she deepen it a bit ("just a tad"). For the hair, Gilbert worked her magic, settling on a slick finger wave with a tucked braid. She told Wu, "I wanted the hair to be slick and wet. This is more modern." Click through to see the team in action and how this look was shaped.
