"You know that it hurts me when you don't come home at night," sings Austra's Katie Stelmanis on the first single from the upcoming Olympia. It's a sentiment we've heard from a thousand different love songs, but sung with Stelmanis' throaty, warbling timbre, it's like we're experiencing it for the first time.
Back in 2011, the Toronto-based singer's debut with Austra was the beautiful Feel It Break, an album where her classically trained vocals cut through the darkness like a laser beam. While "Home" is a decidedly more upbeat affair than what we've heard in the past (Chicago-house style chord progression and near eastern rhythms replace Break's more industrial atmospherics), Stelmanis' voice once again colors everything around it. What could have been a nice, if understated, dance track evolves into something far weirder and truly wonderful.
