We love gathering 'round a table, passing the turkey, and taking seconds of cranberry sauce. We adore our family and friends. That said, we also need a real vacation before the end of the year — one that's not at our S.O.'s parents' house. So, this November we're considering something unorthodox: giving thanks on a beach in the Cayman Islands or in the lavender fields of France.
Granted, peacing out outside of the country isn't the most patriotic move on such a holiday, but if you're traveling with a loved one, can't you be just as appreciative anywhere on the globe? Jeremy Saum, executive editor of AFAR, says one of his most memorable holiday dinners was in Agra, India, on a rooftop restaurant overlooking the Taj Mahal. "I certainly didn’t mind having Palak paneer instead of turkey," he says. According to Saum, it's also a great time to travel since crowds thin in more popular destinations like Paris and Rome. "Thanksgiving is one of the few times Americans get a four-day weekend, so you can do a longer trip without having to burn up as much vacation time."
Ahead, we've found 15 under-$700 flights that will tempt you to go rogue and start a new tradition this year. Of course, the prices depend on where you're flying from (but check out SkyScanner for your own deal). Get that passport in hand.
