New York's celebrating a milestone this weekend. Afropunk is turning the big 1-0. For 10 years, folks looking for a music festival that's free of DayGlo and boom-ditty-boom-ditty-boom beats have flocked to Brooklyn for a weekend of good vibes and killer style.
And, this year is no different. Up-and-coming acts like SZA and Cakes da Killa will take the stage that Janelle Monáe and Toro y Moi ruled during past festivals. In the time since, Monáe and Toro have seen their star power skyrocket to new heights. That's the power of Afropunk. Check out these artists on the smaller stage now, because before you know it, they'll be freakin' holograms with M.I.A.
But, with a lineup that includes 63 acts over just two days, figuring out who to see can be a challenge. That's where we come in. If you're going to see anyone this weekend, get to the front row for these following five acts because, chances are, the next time you see 'em will be in sold-out arenas.
