Alex Trebek Catches Burglar In S.F. Hotel, Tears Achilles Tendon

And in wacky news: The Huffington Post has it that Jeopardy host Alex Trebek kinda-sorta foiled a robbery at his San Francisco hotel early yesterday morning. Apparently the 71-year-old host was in town to host the National Geographic World Championship down at Google H.Q. and was staying at the Marriott Marquis in SoMa when a 56-year-old woman broke into his room and stole cash and a bracelet that was a gift from his mother. Trebek slipped on his underwear (what?!) and ran after the burglar down the hallway, and, in doing so, ruptured his Achilles tendon. Ouch. But, all in all, his efforts paid off and the would-be-thief was was arrested and charged. Although Trebek's belongings still, apparently, need to be reclaimed. The injured television host discussed the ordeal on the Today show this morning: "I woke up and saw a figure in our hotel bedroom and I thought I was dreaming," he says. "I realized immediately that someone had been in the room, and I put on my underwear and ran down the hall to see if I could find her. She came out of the middle room where the ice machine is, and I said, 'What were you doing in our room?' She said, 'I wasn't in your room,' so I said, 'What were you doing?' She said, 'I was visiting friends.' I said, 'No, you weren't.'" And then, basically, he fell but was able to hobble to a phone to call security. Oh, Trebek. We love ya.
