For the new Fleetwood Mac tribute album Just Tell Me That You Want Me, a roster of high-profile indie artists have banded together to pay tribute to the British blues-rock behemoths. Alongside MGMT, Lykke Li, and the New Pornographers (among others), is California-girl-for-life Bethany Cosentino (a.k.a Best Coast), who takes on the Stevie Nicks penned classic “Rhiannon.”
While Best Coast usually tends toward starry-eyed tales of stoners in love, “Rhiannon” isn’t much of a stretch for Cosentino and co., especially considering the countrified direction they’ve taken of late. “Would you stay if she promised you heaven?” go the lyrics, which, according to Nicks, are about “an old Welsh witch.” While Best Coast’s setting may be quite different, it’s just the sort of situation Cosentino thrives on. From Wales to Westwood, fairy tales and heartbreak are both universal.
