Classic ballerina chignons are always in; and sleek, high, dominatrix-y ponytails definitely had their time in the spotlight (thank you, Ariana Grande). But, if you're looking for a new addition to your hair-up repertoire, you've got to take it down a notch. Ponytails, buns, and braids that start at the nape of the neck are having a major moment. Just witness the spring 2015 runways: at Wes Gordon, hairstylist James Pecis created a sleek 'do that reminded us of Beyoncé's 2013 Grammy look; at Peter Som, Eugene Souleiman made a low, Spanish braid; and at Ohne Titel, Jordan M pulled hair into a low, messy bun.

It's easy to see why: These styles are inherently relaxed and don't require an advanced degree to create. The whole point? They're meant to look simple. But, somehow, they're sophisticated and modern at the same time. Bonus: They work on most hair textures.
To go pin straight (like Mary Kate Steinmiller does here), apply a styling wax from roots to ends to tame flyaways and add shine. Then, gather hair at the nape of your neck, secure it with an elastic, and finish off with a few passes of your flat iron. If you prefer a simple, low braid, rub mousse into dry hair, and start braiding from the neck down. Or, for a low-key bun, just rake back your hair with your fingers, twist it at the nape of your neck, and secure the bun with a hair tie.
