If you've been dying to get out of your cramped apartment, or you've just read the Boxcar Children's The Lighthouse Mystery one too many times, we think this government auction may be right you your alley. Starting next month, the General Services Administration is offering up two decommissioned lighthouses near Staten Island, with bidding starting at just $5,000. While it's not exactly St. Tropez, both structures have their inherent charms; One, the three-story Old Orchard, has portholes, while the other, the five-story West Bank, is made of steel and sits among jutting rocks (though, getting there may be a problem). Just make sure you have some savings in your bank account—to take a tour, or make a bid, you need to drop a $20,000 (refundable) deposit. Virginia Woolf would be jealous. (Gothamist)
