Charlotte Perrottey, Co-Head of Christie’s First Open Sale
For the thousands of art history majors who dream of working at Christie’s, there may be one who achieves that goal; Charlotte Perrottey is Exhibit A. After scoring a PR internship during college, she made the nearly impossible transition to full time, as assistant to Amy Cappellazzo (then co-head of the Post-War and Contemporary Art department). Nearly two years ago, Charlotte shifted into specialist work, and now co-heads Christie’s First Open Sale. For those of us who don’t speak museum, this "sale" (or open auction) is definitely a buzzword in the young art world. Since the art is often contemporary, they’re more accessible than, say, a Monet or a Renoir, so budding collectors can get in on the game. Just this year, Charlotte has been instrumental in Christie’s Forrest Bess exhibition and consigned one of the most important lots in the September 19 sale (an early Yayoi Kusama painting that will cover the auction catalog). Wondering how she does it? Us, too. One hint: the girl knows how to multitask.

What moments on the job do you find most rewarding?
“Before our auctions, the department mounts exhibitions of the works in our sales for the public. The shows are incredible, and include de Koonings, Rothkos, Richters, and Shermans, to name a few. It's inspiring to appreciate the works on display. All together, they represent the culmination of our efforts each season.”
