A-list star power is out in full force in the Broadway revival of Cabaret, with Emma Stone garnering stellar reviews for her turn as Sally Bowles and Alan Cumming starring as the shirtless and suspender-crotched Emcee. Even Jennifer Lawrence dropped by. And, let's not forget that Stone took over the main role from three-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams.

With all the singing, dancing, and emoting going on in the performance-within-a-performance, set during the fall of Weimar-era Germany, the makeup on the show needed to be a strong supporting character. After all, like the costumes, those dark moody eyes, dramatic lips, and inky nails reflect the tumultuous early '30s — and the characters' plot lines.

Obviously, the show producers would want to pull out the big guns — or gun — in the form of stage and television makeup designer Angelina Avallone. Work never stops for the showbiz vet, who is exceptionally energetic and was happy to chat with us about the Broadway revival, even if she'd only caught a few hours of sleep after a night shoot for The Americans (presumably tweaking one of Keri Russell’s '80s spy disguises). To conceptualize her version of the looks for Bowles, the Emcee, and the rest of the cast, Avallone looked to history — vintage photos, postcards, and magazines — to really capture the debauched, hedonistic, and free-spending attitudes of the time.
