Fragrance is a wonderful thing, unless you're one of the unfortunate people whose skin is sensitive to scents. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, fragrances in beauty products are the number-one cause of allergic reactions in the skin, not to mention overly perfumed products can also trigger migraines in some people. Problem is, pretty much every beauty product under the sun has added fragrances — hell, even lipsticks are perfumed these days.
The kicker is that fragrances don't actually serve a real beneficial purpose in your skin care products. They are there to give the impression of pampering, or, in some cases, to mask the unpleasant natural odor of the ingredients.
Fortunately, as more people became knowledgeable about sensitive skin and allergies, more and more brands have jumped on the fragrance-free wagon, offering less intense options and products free of artificial fragrances. That's all well and good, but those with severe allergies be warned: Just like the term "natural," there is no regulation over using the words "unscented" or "fragrance-free." So, if you are hyper-sensitive, be sure to check the label and try to steer clear of anything that has parfum or tons of essential oils, as those could cause a reaction in some cases.
