We’re always on the hunt for women who have turned what they love most into their daily bread-and-butter. When we learned that Jenné Claiborne had ditched a successful acting career to become what she semi-jokingly calls “a professional vegan,” we headed uptown for a taste of how she does it.
Our noses led us to her colorful, sun-drenched Harlem apartment (in what was once the famous Savoy Ballroom). There, Claiborne, a certified holistic health counselor, runs her very own vegan cooking biz — The Nourishing Vegan — which offers up her personal chef services, health coaching, cooking classes, and farmers' market tours. She also whips up killer fare for her blog and YouTube show, Sweet Potato Soul; preps classes for Whole Foods; and has authored a digital cookbook, 5 Ingredient Vegan. So, you can imagine how surprised we were that a woman this busy does it all in the name of good health.
Like her cooking, Claiborne's home and personal style is steeped in history and soul, influenced by her Atlanta roots and the vibrant culture around her, and punctuated by easy, colorful goods from T.J.Maxx. Ahead, we get Claiborne's wisdom on how to turn your passion into your occupation, balance it with the rest of your life, and never look back. (Bonus: You'll snag a delicious vegan cookie recipe along the way.)
