While Memory Tapes (a.k.a. Dayve Hawk) may have been lumped in with chillwavers like Washed Out and Neon Indian, he's long since ditched the hazy vibes of his first record in exchange for high-concept pop like that found on last year's Grace/Confusion LP. Now with "Sheila," the newest single from that release, we have a video that is as dramatic as the track itself.
As the protagonist repeatedly tries to take her life by jumping from the balcony of a HUF Haus in the forest, ghostly onlookers gather to watch. Supposedly inspired by "fractional suicide" (the phenomenon of poisoning yourself little by little), the video plays like a nightmarish eternal-return scenario where Sheila must relive her (very stylish) death ad nauseum. Not the lightest subject matter, true, but there's no denying the dark beauty of director Garry Wood's treatment. Check out the video below, and watch for Memory Tapes' tour dates — the first since Grace/Confusion's release.
