Rebecca Minkoff Schools Us On “Sexy Tomboy” Beauty

Standing in front of her massive mood board, tucked away into a corner with racks overflowing with clothing samples, Rebecca Minkoff attempted to describe the girl she designs for. "She's a sexy tomboy," she mused. "She'll be wearing the gorgeous, feminine dress, but then want to throw on a motorcycle jacket with it. It's that duality that we love." And, for her 2015 resort collection, Minkoff took that duality on vacation — to Ibiza, to be exact. "There's this crazy club scene that everyone associates with it, but there's a part of the island that is extremely rustic and boho," she said. "I was trying to capture both sides."

While the clothes were an obvious interpretation of that inspiration, the hair and makeup were a bit more of a muted translation. Tresemmé hairstylist Jeanie Syfu wanted to create a style that really worked with the model's hair. "She has such great texture as it is, so we just really wanted to highlight that," she said. Syfu applied Tresemmé Flawless Curls Extra Hold Mousse from root to tip before diffusing it on high heat. She then took a few random pieces and defined them with the help of a curling iron. "There isn't really a part — as she's posing with the clothes, she's just kind of tossing her hair from one side to the other," Syfu explained. "We wanted something playful, with a lot of movement."
Syfu really worked to pick a style that would complement the model's hair. "She has such a great statement cut," she explained. "When you've got a cut like that, it's best not to have it overly styled." To mattify the bob, Syfu spritzed on some dry shampoo and fluffed with her fingers.
To offset the grungy, no-muss style, makeup artist Rie Tsuki focused on a soft, feminine makeup look. "We're keeping things very minimal. There's no base, just a little concealer, and a touch of contour," she explained. To give the lips a bit of color, Tsuki dabbed on Kevin Aucoin's The Creamy Glow in Mystere just along the inner ridge. She then added a little mascara, filled in the brows, and that was it. "We wanted to keep things glowing and simple," she said. "It's for resort, so you never want a lot of heavy makeup."
Between the hair and the makeup, the look was one that would be the perfect accompaniment to anyone's summer style — even if you can't make it to Ibiza yourself. It just proves the fact that Minkoff's world is pretty awesome but still easily accessible. And, we appreciate that.
