Miami Meet The Limelight: Grab Old School Rave Culture At The Standard

limelight
Thought raving in clubs is pretty much what we do after we get off of work here, there was a time when a bajillion club promoters weren't blowing up your iPhone or Facebook on a weekly basis. When the Limelight proved the elite club scene lived in New York, there were no cellulars, Zuckerburg certainly was toddling in diapers, and Michael Alig wasn't the name of a criminal. But then a Canadian entrepreneur by the name of Peter Gatien changed, well, everything — in New York and beyond. In fact, he was dubbed the “King of New York Clubs” at one point in his career. Man, what a fight that would be nowadays. Fortunately, you can watch the rise (then descent, then rise again) of Gatien in a new movie by producers Rakontur on the club scene that birthed all club scenes.

In collaboration with Gatien’s daughter, Jen Gatien, Rakontur’s director Billy Corben (Cocaine Cowboys) presents Limelight, a documentary on Gatien’s life as a leading player and game-changer of the entertainment industry during the birth of rave. Don’t miss an exclusive screening presented by The Standard Spa and O Cinema, where you’ll have the chance to participate in a Q+A with Corben and producer Alfred Spellman. Then, since you’ll be motivated, maybe hit up LIV after?
When: Sunday, March 8, 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Where: The Standard Spa, 40 Island Avenue, 305-673-1717.
RSVP required, do so here.
