This Is Our Jam: I Break Horses, “Winter Beats”

The first time I saw Lost In Translation was the day I had my wisdom teeth taken out. I can only remember fragments—a collage of foggy images, dull pain, and unpleasant nausea underscored by a Vicodin-induced haze. In other words: Not a bad way to experience a Sophia Coppola film. Listening to “Winter Beat” from sweet-ish, neo-shoe-gazers I Break Horses evokes a similarly woozy emotionality. The track is built on a repetitious analog synth that becomes swallowed up in layers of guitar and soaring vocals. Like My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain did for the Lost in Translation soundtrack, or the similarly nostalgic work of M83, “Winter Beats” evokes sleepy visions that feel equally remote and intimate. It’s the same feeling that I got as a teenager watching Bill Murray get lost in the Tokyo neon, only this time, without the pain in my jaw. (Pitchfork)
