Up-and-coming London-based artist Kwes. has garnered a ton of pre-release buzz for his Meantime EP (out May 1st on Warp). Comparisons to James Blake, SBTRKT, and other British producers has abounded, but Kwes.’ lush take on the electronic crooner-genre (or whatever you want to call it) is beautifully and distinctive in its own right. “lgoyh” is a seven minute slow-burner that rises from stark vocals, to a tidal-wave of lush synths, rich bass, and feedback-laced guitar. “lgoyh” may be soulful, but its not sad. Rather, it’s a heartfelt statement of reassurance to a loved one — “I’m not going anywhere” repeats Kwes. over and over again, and by the time the track comes to an end we can almost feel Kews. hand on our shoulder.
