When Twin Shadow’s album came out last November I had no idea how much I would come to identify with the first line of “I Can’t Wait.” Now, it is nearly mid-March and “I cannot wait for summer” has become something of a mantra as I walk the still-freezing streets of New York, fantasizing about a day when the temperature hits 50 and stays there. The song’s other lyrics recall a clandestine conversation between two lovers at some fog-machined junior prom. And the music, steeped in gauzy New Romantics gaudiness, sidles between wistful melodrama and an all-out dance party. Whether Twin Shadow is talking about something less literal than being cold all the time is irrelevant. The sentiment remains: “I cannot wait for June.”
