This Is Our Jam: Young Galaxy, “Pretty Boy”

Way back in 2011, Montreal's Young Galaxy released Shapeshifting, an airy LP full of slinky pop that quickly grew to be one of our favorites of the year. Now the band is back, and like its previous album title would suggest, its sound has indeed evolved over the past couple of years.

"Pretty Boy," the first single from its upcoming record, Ultramarine, plays like a lush, widescreen take on its original dream-pop formula. Over unrelenting drums and carefully arranged strings, lead singer Catherine McCandless belts an inspirational ode to her "pretty boy." "And I know you feel isolated, and I feel what you won't say," she reassures the title figure. Be on the lookout for Ultramarine April 23 via Paper Bag Records.
