Let’s Talk Marriage: How Young Is Too Young?

We've all heard stories before (perhaps from our grandparents) about couples who tied the knot fresh out of high school, barely old enough to vote, and still too young to participate in the toast at their own wedding. But what exactly are today's standards? Just last week, everyone who ever watched an episode of Hannah Montana likely joined in for a collaborative "what?!" when news broke of 19-year-old Miley Cyrus' engagement to Liam Hemsworth. It's not that we don't like to celebrate a happy Hollywood couple, but hearing the news only makes us remember what we were like at 19, and more importantly, how much we've changed since then.

Cyrus could soon join the ranks of other celebrities who walked down the aisle before being able to legally partake in the Champagne toast, including Drew Barrymore, Macaulay Culkin, and Olivia Wilde, all of whom would later file for divorce. The Huffington Post also reports that Wilde recently shared with Amanda de Cadenet of The Conversation that marrying Italian prince Tao Ruspoli at 18 years old "stunted her growth" and ultimately lead to her unhappiness.

Don't get us wrong, we're not pessimistic about young love (haven't we all been there?) and we do have successful examples to follow, such as Dolly Parton, whose marriage has lasted since the country star wed at age 20, and even some of our own relatives who got hitched in their teens. But, in today's world, we can't help but wonder just how young is too young? Celebrity status aside, what do you think about these barely legal brides and grooms?
