It’s going on two years since Veckatimest was released, and in that time, Chris Taylor has expanded his range as a producer, doing great work with artists whose sound differs greatly from his own band, Grizzly Bear. With Blood Orange’s debut single “Dinner,” Taylor's production continues in the vein of the ‘80s promcore that helped make Twin Shadow’s debut a favorite of mine. Blood Orange is the new project of Dev Hynes, who is himself a formidable songwriter, having worked with Solange Knowles and participating as a member of Test Icicles. It's now evident that Hynes has a smooth delivery that can stand up just fine on its own. On "Dinner" Hynes goes for chilled-out electro pop with a serious groove, and owes more than a little inspiration to Prince. While a new Grizzly Bear album can't come soon enough, if Taylor continues to man the boards on songs as good as "Dinner," I can wait just a little while longer.
