Brooklyn’s Friends play streamlined dream pop with a post-punk urgency. Their title track “Friend Crush” features an Italo baseline that liquidly undulates underneath a thumping drum stomp, while reverb-inflected synth warbles like if the Spaghetti West met the Far East. Most prominent are Samantha Urbani’s vocals, which sound by turns headstrong and pensive. The refrain, “I wanna be your friend” could be both a question and a statement, invoking a feeling that she is both desperate and desperate for a good time. With pop as tight as this, I’m sure we'll all get what she's looking for.
