Often, the most punk rock thing to do is defy expectations. Black Flag grew their hair long and released the sludgy My War; Refused unleashed the diverse musical assault of The Shape of Punk to Come; Fucked Up’s hardcore is operatic in its scope and ambition.
Iceage
— a group of young angry Danes—don’t seem to give a fuck about redefining punk. Instead, they just play it—taking the best things about those bands (as well as obvious heroes Wire) and mashing them together in a visceral, un-philosophical sort of way. “Broken Bone” could not be a better name for a track this heavy, spiky, and rhythmically pummeling. Yet, even though Iceage don’t seem to try to defy expectations, they surely do. No one expected a bunch of Danish teenagers to make punk this violent, hungry, and musically proficient in 2011. I mean, have you heard these drums?
