For most of us, living green means energy-efficient lightbulbs, an extra sweater in winter instead of extra degrees on the thermostat, and maybe saving up for a hybrid car. But someday, as technology advances, the dream might get a lot bigger — and this amazing zero-energy house is a glimpse at that future.

The physics department at Italy's University of Padua teamed up with design firm Traverso-Vighy to create this spectacular pad that's entirely powered by its own solar panels and geothermal sources, and insulated using 40,000 recycled plastic bottles. The rest of the home is made entirely from recycled materials, as well. And in case you're worried that going deep, deep into the green means sacrificing on looks, you oughta know better. The sleek, modern lines are a design junkie's dream, and in order to maximize natural heating from the sun during winter months, the place is surrounded by huge floor-to-ceiling windows. When we say it's the world's coolest home, the pun is intended — super-functional design, including automated blinds, keep the place as close to optimal temperature as possible, year round. (Gizmag)
