Pure X, La Big Vic, Kirin J Callinan: 285 Kent, May 15, $12
Austin psych-rockers Pure X have made one of our favorite recent guitar records with their new LP, Crawling Up the Stairs. Hearkening back to the days of The Jesus and Mary Chain, the band is bummer-rock at its best and purest. They play Mercury Lounge the day before, but the 285 Kent show is the one to catch.
Wednesday, May 15, 8 p.m., 285 Kent, 285 Kent Ave (between South 1st and South 2nd streets); Brooklyn; 718-599-1450.
Kurt Vile, Angel Olsen, Steve Gunn: Bowery Ballroom, May 16, $20
For more chilled-out anhedonia, Kurt Vile's upcoming show at Webster Hall is a good bet. To be honest, though, we are just as excited to see the lovely Angel Olsen, whose lilting folk songs are absolutely gorgeous.
Thursday, May 16, 8 p.m., Bowery Ballroom, 6 Delancey Street (between Bowery and Chrystie); 212-533-2111.
Great GoogaMooga: Prospect Park, May 17, 18, 19, $54.50
With Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sharon Jones, Matt & Kim, The Flaming Lips, Chairlift, and more, the food-centric Great Googa Mooga festival has no shortage of fantastic music. Munching on your favorite food-truck fare while listening awesome bands in Prospect Park is one of those quintessential NYC springtime events that shouldn't be missed.
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, May 17, 18, 19, Prospect Park.
