Single optimists beware: There are so many young, single, and broke people living in New York City that it's basically a cynical cesspool of people cramming into bars, small apartments, and busy parks complaining about being young, single, and broke. Don't get us wrong, we are absolutely obsessed with this town and couldn't imagine living anywhere else, but for the hopeful one who's searching for a strong community in which to thrive, look no further than Austin, Texas.
Before you roll your eyes, consider the results from MoneyUnder30's survey of the 20 best cities for young, single, broke people. They took into account the availability of cheap living, drinks, and thrills when they compiled their list because why live in a place where a night out sets you back $100 when you can party, and fill your fridge for the same amount? Austin has that (and SXSW!); New Orleans has that; Seattle has that, and so does Des Moines, Iowa.

Yep, Iowa is just as hip as Salt Lake City. KCCI, a local television station, interviewed a Des Moines resident who said that the city's changed since she was a kid. "There's all kinds of stuff going on here that didn't happen when I was a kid, which is awesome." Plus, residents probably live in apartments larger than a shoe box — but hey, we New Yorkers will always have our skyscrapers . (Business Insider)
