What happens when the world's largest knish maker temporarily ceases operation due to a factory fire? Well, according to loyal consumers and the proprietors dependent on the crispy delight, mass chaos and panic. “Our customers...are calling us saying they are literally searching supermarkets and stores and they’re all asking when we’ll be back,” Stacey Ziskin Gabay (one of the owners of the 92-year-old Gabila’s Knishes) told the Chicago-Sun Times.
When you're responsible for cranking out approximately 15 million knishes a year, this is no small void. Along with online sales, Gabila’s goodies are sold all over the country, with New York, Florida, and California being the most needy for their knish fix. While this has definitely put a damper on the dinner table, there is a happy ending to this story: Gabila's is planning on opening up shop again by Thanksgiving — which is also the start of Hanukkah (phew!).
Of course, with everything that's going on in the world today, we kinda have to agree with these fine words of wisdom from Kenny Kohn, a chef at Katz's Delicatessen in New York: “Get over it! Get a life! It’s just a knish.” (Chicago Sun-Times)
