Marie Claire Shows Off Hollywood’s New Female Guard The Right Way

In the olden days, magazines used have just one cover and call it done until the next month's issue. Now, as a result of either the general public's greediness for more, an attempt at selling more copies by appealing to a larger audience, or a mix of both, publications are releasing more than one cover. V magazine's done it on more than one occasion with its most recent issues (read: the Music Issue and Gaga's epic September feature). And, as of today, Marie Claire announced it, too, has jumped on the bandwagon with a monstrous five-cover May issue.
Lupita Nyong'o, Elizabeth Olsen, Kate Mara, Elle Fanning, and Emilia Clarke have been dubbed Hollywood's "Fresh Faces" by the publication. Nyong'o, the supernova; Olsen, the free spirit; Mara, the chameleon; Fanning, the ingenue; Clarke, the wild child. The covers themselves are your run-of-the-mill covers — smiley and alluring, but nail each woman's personality on the head. However, in light of Cosmo's May issue showcasing the new guard of SNL's female comedians, these covers, despite the relative lack of groundbreaking portraiture, command our attention.
Each woman is humbly photographed and styled, not to tantalize, but to their respective personalities. Even Elizabeth Olsen's bra top and blazer combo comes off as powerful rather than lustful. It's a mature collection of images that aims to make their star power shine even brighter. Plus, the interviews inside are as insightful as you'd want them to be. The only thing missing here is a gold headband on Lupita's precious dome, but who needs that when she's got a pretty golden Oscar statuette?
The full issue and each of Marie Claire's five covers will hit stands April 22, 2014.
