Ready to pack up your bags and load the U-Haul? A new report on the best U.S. cities for careers just might inspire a major move.
Glassdoor has released its list of the 25 best cities for jobs, using three criteria to establish its rankings. The Glassdoor Job Score is based on the number of hiring opportunities, the city's cost of living and affordability, and employee satisfaction.
Based on those factors, Raleigh, North Carolina, emerged as the top city for jobs. The capital city had a Job Score of 4.1, with 24,146 job openings, a median base salary of $50,950, and a job satisfaction rating of 3.3.
"Raleigh has long held a reputation for tech companies looking to flee the expensive and congested Northeast corridor, with companies like IBM, Cisco, and SAS setting up shop in North Carolina," Glassdoor explained in a press release. "Raleigh is also situated in the famous 'Research Triangle' and has several universities feeding skilled workers to employers. Couple this with Raleigh’s walkable neighborhoods and affordable homes, it’s no surprise that Raleigh stands out as the best city for jobs."
Interestingly, Raleigh has the second-lowest population of all the cities on the list, with sixth-place Salt Lake City, Utah, being the smallest.
Kansas City, MO; Oklahoma City, OK; Austin, TX; and Seattle, WA, rounded out the top five, with Glassdoor noting the trend of affordable housing and "stable" environments luring job-seekers away from big hubs like San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, and Boston.
