Blooming Love: 10 V-Day Flower Tips From A Local Bud Guru

Flowers may seem like a cliché Valentine's Day gift, but it certainly doesn't stop people from sending them this time of the year. The bud biz is working overtime on February 14, so don't be surprised if you get a delivery from your main squeeze — or secret admirer. Or, perhaps, you're the instigator looking to send a little floral love. Either way, we've got a few tips guaranteed to maximize your bountiful bouquet.
But we're the first to admit we don't exactly have a green thumb, so we called upon world-renowned floral designer Michael Gaffney, who's pedigree includes everything from television shows and movie sets (Black Swan, y'all!) to New York fashion shows and prestigious weddings all over the states. He also teaches at the Chicago School of Flower Design — just in case you wanted to be a stem sensation yourself.
Gaffney offers his expertise on how to avoid overdone arrangements, the best way to extend the life of your blooms (hint: it's not plant food!), and more. So, click through and clear a spot on that desk or table.
